Second Half Real Property Tax Bills Mailed

(Washington, DC) The Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR) announced today that more than 150,000 real property tax bills for the 2003 Second Half Real Property Tax Year were mailed today to District property owners. These tax bills reflect current and past due real property tax liabilities.

If property owners do not receive a bill in the mail by August 21, they should call (202) 727-4TAX (4829). Failure to receive a tax bill does not excuse individuals from paying taxes owed. The due date for payment is Monday, September 15. If a tax payment is late, the property owner will be charged a 10 percent penalty and a 1.5 percent interest fee for each full or partial month the payment is late. If the property owner’s mortgage company makes the payment of their real property tax bill, the property owner must ensure that payments are made by the due date.

For more information about the Homestead tax credit and/or senior citizen programs, call (202) 727-4TAX (4829) or visit OTR’s website at http://www.cfo.dc.gov and select Taxpayer Services. If property owners believe they are already eligible, they should call to make an appointment with a Homestead Audit representative in the Customer Service Walk-in Center at 941 North Capitol Street, NE, on the first floor, and bring documentation to substantiate their eligibility.
