Shop Tax-Free and Do It in DC!

(Washington, DC) The summer is halfway over, and school is fast approaching. Summer clothes are rolling out; fall fashions are rolling in. Pencils, papers, calculators and erasers will soon replace swimming pools and summer camps.

What better time to shop tax-free? What better place to shop than DC?

The District's "Sales Tax Holiday" is your chance to celebrate at our city's retail stores by purchasing clothing, footwear and school supplies costing $100 or less, per item, tax-free. From Friday, August 9 through Sunday, August 18, you can buy individual items valued at less than $100 with no sales tax. There is no limit on your total purchase, only a limit on individual cost. This benefit extends to clothing and footwear for adults, too - even if you do not have children. From downtown to Georgetown, Georgia Avenue to Wisconsin Avenue, Good Hope Road to Military Road, Ward 1 to Ward 8, you will get two full weekends of shopping tax-free.

The District's "Sales Tax Holiday" is designed to support our local merchants; encourage District residents to shop in the city; and help parents, guardians and loved ones prepare their students for success in the upcoming school year.

"Who doesn't want to look their best on the first day of school? I want all students to look, feel and be their sharpest," commented Mayor Anthony A. Williams. "While the city is working to improve the quality of education for every student - especially at our lowest performing schools - we're giving parents and guardians a break with local and affordable shopping for the supplies their families need."

Mark your calendars. Save your change. It is time to shop tax-free, and do it in DC.
