Have You Filed Your Taxes?
(Washington, DC) Millions of taxpayers filed an automatic extension on the due date of their federal tax returns until August 15, 2003. Almost half of those will request an additional extension giving them until October 15, 2003, to file their returns. All of these taxpayers can take advantage of IRS e-file. The IRS accepts e-file returns until October 15, making it a quick, smart way to get taxes done.
Benefits of IRS E-File
- Fast Refunds - You can get your refund in half the time. If direct deposit is elected, some refunds will be received in as few as 10 days.
- Accuracy - Your chance of getting an error notice from the IRS is reduced.
- Security - Your privacy and security are assured.
- Proof of Acceptance - You receive an electronic acknowledgement within 48 hours that the IRS has accepted your return for processing.
- No Cost - Use the IRS website to view the criteria for free Internet filing and to access commercial tax preparation and e-file services. Fees may be charged to individuals with higher income levels and for more complex returns.
- Electronic Payment Options - Convenient, safe and secure electronic payment options are available. You can e-file and pay your taxes by scheduling an electronic funds withdrawal from your checking or savings account or pay by credit card.
- Electronic Signatures - Create your own personal identification number (PIN) and file a completely paperless return through your tax preparation software or tax professional. There is nothing to mail.
- Federal/State Filing - Prepare and file your federal and state tax returns together and double the benefits you get from e-file.
Four Options for E-File
- You can use tax preparation software on your personal computer. A computer with a modem or Internet access is all you need to file your tax return using IRS e-file. You can buy tax preparation software at various electronics stores or computer and office supply stores. You can also download software from the Internet, or prepare and file your return online by using a Web-based tax preparation software package. Best of all, when you use your personal computer, you can e-file your return from the comfort of your home any time of the day or night.
- Some taxpayers can now prepare and e-file their individual income tax returns free using commercial tax preparation software. To determine if you are eligible for free Internet filing and to view the criteria for free filing, visit the IRS website. Fees may be charged to individuals with higher income levels and for more complex returns.
- Tele-File is also another easy way to file your return. Tele-File allows you to file your federal tax return using a touch-tone telephone. Only taxpayers who met the qualifications for Form 1040EZ in the prior year are eligible to receive the Tele-File package for the current year. A Tele-File package is automatically mailed to you if you are eligible. Tele-File is filed directly with the IRS, and it is free.
- Many tax professionals can electronically file returns for their clients. Depending on the provider and the specific services requested, a fee may be charged. Visit the IRS website to find an authorized IRS e-file provider near you.
