Tax Sale Begins July 12 for District Properties With Unpaid Taxes

(Washington, DC) The Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR) will hold its annual, public Tax Sale July 12-16, 2004. This year 9,188 properties will be auctioned, representing $55 million in commercial and residential real property tax liens for which property taxes were in arrears on Oct. 1. Property owners with unpaid taxes have until the date of the auction to pay any taxes due and avoid having their properties sold.

“Last year, 1,966 properties were sold and a total of $20 million in delinquent tax revenue was collected as a result of the Tax Sale,” says Dan Black, deputy chief financial officer for tax and revenue. “By bringing these properties back onto the active tax rolls, we provide a sounder financial base for the District.”

The Tax Sale is required by DC statute and will be held at 941 North Capitol Street, NE, Washington, DC, on the 4th floor. The Tax Sale will begin on Monday, July 12, 2004, and will continue each day that week during the hours of 8:30 am to 12 noon and 1 pm to 4 pm, or until all properties advertised for that day are sold. Prospective bidders must register to participate.

A list of the delinquent properties to be auctioned was advertised June 17, 2004, in The Washington Post and The Washington Times. Advertised properties are listed by parcel, square, suffix and lot number, name of the owner of record, and unpaid tax amount. A list of the properties to be included in the Tax Sale is also available online in the Tax Sale section of this website.

To register for the Tax Sale auction or to inquire about the status of a delinquent property, please call the OTR Customer Service Center at (202) 727-4TAX (727-4829) or visit the Customer Service walk-in center at 941 North Capitol Street, NE.
