(Washington, DC) The Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR) announced today that it will mail approximately 10,000 postcards explaining a simplified procedure for District taxpayers to follow when filing their DC personal property tax return.
The postcard follows a recent mailing of FP-31 Personal Property Tax packages to taxpayers on June 3. The postcard provides direction on how to find the personal property tax package on the OTR website if a taxpayer did not receive it in the mail.
To simplify filing for those taxpayers with personal property less than the $50,000 exclusion (Page 2, Line 6 of the FP-31 form), the postcard instructs taxpayers to file in the following manner:
- Write "Under $50,000" directly above the title "2006 FP-31" (Page 1) of the FP-31 and complete the rest of page 1, and
- Sign, date (Page 2) and mail your return.
A DC personal property tax return must be filed by every individual, corporation, partnership, executor, administrator, guardian, receiver, trustee, or any entity that owns or holds in trust any tangible personal property located or used in a trade or business in the District. The 2006 DC Personal Property Tax return must be filed on or before July 31, 2005, and returns should be mailed to the Office of Tax and Revenue, PO Box 96035, Washington, DC 20090-6035.
Additional information on the personal property tax may be obtained by calling OTR's Customer Service Center at (202) 727-4TAX (727-4829) or visiting the walk-in center at 941 North Capitol Street, NE, 1st floor, Washington DC.
