Tax Sale Begins July 11 for District Properties with Unpaid Taxes

(Washington, DC) The Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR) will hold its annual, public Tax Sale beginning Monday, July 11, 2005. The Tax Sale will continue each day, except Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays, until all the real properties advertised for that day are sold. This year 3,843 properties will be auctioned, representing $10 million in commercial and residential real property tax liens for which property taxes were in arrears on October 1. Property owners with unpaid taxes have until the date of the auction to pay any taxes due and avoid having their properties sold.

“Last year, 2,738 properties were sold and a total of $24.5 million in delinquent tax revenue was collected as a result of the Tax Sale,” said Deputy Chief Financial Officer Daniel L. Black, Jr. “By bringing these properties back onto the active tax rolls, we provide a sounder financial base for the District.”

The Tax Sale is required by DC statute and will be held at 941 North Capitol Street, NE, Washington, DC, on the 4th floor during the hours of 8:30 am to 12 noon and 1 pm to 4 pm. Registration for the Tax Sale, which is mandatory, begins Tuesday, July 5 and continues until the final day of the Tax Sale. To register for the sale, prospective bidders must make a deposit of at least 20 percent of the total purchase price of any real property they plan to purchase.

A list of the delinquent properties to be auctioned was advertised June 16 in The Washington Post and The Washington Times. Properties are listed by parcel, square, suffix and lot number, name of the owner of record, and unpaid tax amount. A list of the properties to be included in the Tax Sale is also available on the Tax Sale page.

To register for the Tax Sale or to inquire about the status of a delinquent property, call the OTR Customer Service Center at (202) 727-4TAX (727-4829) or visit the Customer Service walk-in center at 941 North Capitol Street, NE, on the 1st floor.
