Tax Office Steps-Up Compliance Initiatives to Protect Taxpayers and District Revenues

On March 21, Geoffrey Knar-Korli, owner of Akosombo, Inc. and Unicorn Services, Inc., was sentenced to five years unsupervised probation and ordered to pay OTR $119,504 in taxes, fraud interest and fraud penalties. Knar-Korli pled guilty to six personal counts of tax fraud for failing to file various sales and use tax returns for Akosombo, Inc. in 2003 and 2004. He also pled Unicorn Service, Inc. guilty to four counts of tax fraud for failing to file various sales and use tax returns and a corporation franchise tax return.

Foxhall Gourmet of Georgetown, along with owner Emanuel S. Anagnostiadis and treasurer Demetrios E. Anagnostiadis, pled guilty to seven counts of failure to pay gross sales tax and failure to file corporation franchise tax returns for tax years 2000 through 2003 on March 15. Sentencing has been scheduled for May 18.

OTR encourages the public to report tax fraud by calling their toll-free Tax Fraud Hotline at 1-800-380-3495 or by sending an email to Taxfraudhotline@dc.gov. Through the hotline, individuals can anonymously report a person’s failure to file taxes, unreported income, falsifying information on tax returns, real property tax fraud, and the sale of Social Security numbers. All allegations will be kept confidential and will be investigated by OTR or referred to the DC Office of the Inspector General.
