(Washington, DC) – As the filing deadline nears, the Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR) reminds District residents to take advantage of all services available to meet their tax obligations, specifically online electronic filing. E-filing is a convenient method that makes filing taxes faster and safer. and more convenient, while also allowing taxpayers to receive their refund quicker. Taxpayers also have the option to file the FR-127 -- Extension of Time to File Income Tax Return electronically and pay any amount due.

Free Tax Preparation Assistance: Customer service specialists in the walk-in center, located at 1101 4th Street, SW, Suite W270, will prepare District individual income tax returns at no cost for anyone requesting the service. Taxpayers needing tax preparation assistance should bring:
- A copy of completed federal tax return
- Supporting W-2 forms and schedules, and
- A valid driver’s license or government-issued identification.
- Forms: Forms, instructions, booklets, and additional information are available for download from OTR’s website. The documents may also be ordered by calling (202) 727-4TAX (4829) and picked up at OTR’s Customer Service Walk-In Center, 1101 4th Street, SW, Suite W270, between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
- Free File: OTR’s website includes links to a number of online tax preparation programs that allow low-income and other eligible taxpayers to prepare and e-file their federal and DC individual income tax returns at no charge. Taxpayers must first meet the eligibility requirements.
- Extensions: If you cannot file your DC individual income tax return by the April 15 deadline, you can file for an automatic six-month extension,which will push the filing deadline October 15, 2015. The extension is for resident and nonresident returns. If you have a balance due, you still must pay what you owe by April 15 or face penalty and interest charges. (It’s an extension of the time to file, not of the time to pay). If you have a balance due, file Form FR-127 -- Extension of Time to File.
