The Office of Tax and Revenue is an active participant with other states in addressing the fraudulent refund scheme involving Turbo Tax returns first identified by the Utah State Tax Commission. It has put in place procedures which would prevent the issuance of fraudulent refunds arising from this scheme. With effective controls in place, the Office of Tax and Revenue continues to process Turbo Tax returns on hand.
Turbo Tax itself has halted the transmission of new returns to taxing authorities pending validation of the returns which it has on hand and the institution of additional fraud filters. Turbo Tax has advised that it is continuing to accept returns. These will be validated before submission to taxing authorities. Turbo Tax does reject taxpayer returns for a variety of reasons, so taxpayers should not assume that a rejection is related to this refund fraud scheme. OTR expects that Turbo Tax will resume transmitting DC income tax returns shortly.
