Federal Shutdown Forces Suspension of District of Columbia Tax Refunds

Monday, October 7, 2013
Due to effects of the federal government shutdown, the District of Columbia Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR) announced today that it has suspended the issuance of tax refunds until further notice. To the extent that individual refunds are paid after 90 days, and business tax refunds are paid after 180 days, from the date of application, interest as provided by law will be paid.

OTR will continue to accept all tax returns as they become due, including tax returns with payment.  In particular, individuals who requested an extension of time to file their 2012 returns should file them by the October 15, 2013 extended due date.

OTR reminds taxpayers:
  • To continue to file and pay taxes as normal
  • That all tax deadlines remain in effect, including those covering individuals, corporations, partnerships, and employers.
For taxpayers seeking assistance, the Customer Service Center walk-in center at 1101 4th Street, SW, Suite W250 remains open, as does the Customer Service call center at     (202) 727-4TAX (4829).
