OTR to Hold Discount Tax Sale Beginning March 14

Thursday, February 10, 2011

(Washington, DC) – The Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR) announced today that on March 14 it will hold a “Discount Sale”, for the remaining 353 delinquent real properties from the September 2010 or Special Deed Tax Sale. The Discount Sale permits OTR to sell a property for less than the total amount of delinquent taxes due. The total delinquent amount is $10.3 million.

The sale will run from 8:30 am until 12 noon and from 1 pm until 4:30 pm, and will continue every day thereafter (legal holidays excepted) until all properties are sold.  The sale will take place at 1101 4th Street, SW, Suite W250, Washington, DC.

At the Discount Sale, the opening bid for each real property will be $300, regardless of the amount of delinquent taxes owed on the property.  Each property will be sold to the highest bidder.  After successfully foreclosing the right of redemption in the Superior Court, and after having paid all taxes and liabilities, the successful purchaser will be awarded a tax deed to the respective real property.

Mandatory registration for the Discount Sale begins March 7, 2011 and continues until all the real properties are sold. The registration form must be completed and filed with OTR.  To register, visit OTR’s Customer Service Administration – Walk-In Center at 1101 4th Street, SW, 2nd Floor, Washington, DC. Prior to bidding on a property at the Discount Sale, a purchaser must have made a deposit with Cashier’s Office of the DC Treasurer of at least 20 percent of the property’s purchase price. Purchasers are also required to complete Form FR-500, Combined Business Tax Registration Application, prior to registering. This form can be found on OTR’s website at www.taxpayerservicecenter.com under “Tax Forms/Publications.”

Potential purchasers with questions should call OTR at (202) 727-4TAX (4829).
