OTR Reminds District Residents of Services Available to Help Them Meet Their Tax Obligations

Monday, April 4, 2011

As the filing deadline nears, the Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR) urges District residents to take advantage of all services available to meet their tax obligations, specifically online electronic filing. E-filing makes filing taxes faster, safer, and more convenient; while also allowing taxpayers to receive their refund quicker. Taxpayers also have the option to electronically file the Extension of Time to File Income Tax Return, and pay any amount due.

OTR also offers other services to make filing as stress-free as possible, such as:

Email Tax Assistance

New this year, taxpayers can e-mail return preparation or other DC tax questions to  [email protected]. OTR does not recommend providing confidential information in the email. However, the last four digits of their Social Security Number can be provided.

Free Tax Preparation Assistance

Customer service specialists in the walk-in center, located at 1101 4th street, SW, Suite W270, will prepare District individual income tax returns at no cost for anyone requesting the service. Taxpayers must bring a copy of their completed federal tax return, applicable schedules, and W-2s or statements showing DC withholdings.

No appointment is necessary. Assistance is available from 8:15 am to 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Taxpayers requesting assistance may also call (202) 727-4TAX (4829).

Taxpayers are reminded that their 2010 tax forms are due on Monday, April 18. The normal filing deadline of April 15 is a legal holiday in the District of Columbia – Emancipation Day.
