The Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR) reminds District of Columbia taxpayers that the 1st half Real Property Tax payments are due Thursday, March 31. Payments by check or money order may be mailed to the district in the envelope enclosed with the first half bill sent to each taxpayer or to the address shown on the bill.
In addition, Real Property Tax payments can be made by personal check, cashier’s check or money order at your local Wells Fargo/Wachovia Bank Store.
Cash payments cannot be accepted at Wells Fargo/Wachovia Bank locations unless the taxpayer has a deposit account with the bank. Wells Fargo/Wachovia accountholders presenting cash will be asked to purchase a cashier’s check (at no cost) which will be credited to the District of Columbia’s account.
Taxpayers who need to pay their Real Property Tax bill with cash must bring the bill and payment to 1101 4th Street, SW, 1st Floor, the District of Columbia’s main cashier office ,which is open weekdays from 8:15 am until 4:30 pm.
Recent changes in the US Patriot Act and the Bank Secrecy Act enacted by the Congress have made it illegal for Wells Fargo/Wachovia to accept cash in payment of bills from individuals who do not have accounts at the bank. OTR apologizes for any inconvenience this causes for our taxpayers. OTR is exploring any options that will give the taxpayers relief from this requirement in the future.
